A03 Progress

I just finished working on the design for the facade of my box.  I was having some trouble with creating the fins for the structure but I figured out how to make it using the fins.  Right now I am experimenting with the camera to try to find the best angle to take my renderings from.

Paneling Tools

Three surfaces created using the loft command

Grid panels created using ptGridCurve

2D Panels created using ptPanelGridCustom

For these iterations, I designed my own grid that I wanted to be projected on the curved surfaces.  I created the patterns using the array paneling tool.

3D Panels created using ptPanel3DCustom

These were slightly more complicated than the 2D paneling tools.  It is easy for them to look cluttered if the shape that I was using was too dense.  Also, if the shape was too complicated, it took longer for Rhino to create the mesh.  The simpler shapes created more readable patterns.

A02

From this assignment, I learned a lot about the different techniques that I can use in Rhino in order to manipulate my drawings to show specific ideas.  I learned about the use of the contour tool and how this could possibly be effective when taking a section in building design.  The waffling technique also showed a different way in which I can now make my 3-D models.  I also finally learned how to use the laser cutter.  I am excited to have this skill and I know it will only help further my ability to present my design ideas. The only issue I had with this assignment was the actual making of the model.  It was hard for many of the pieces to stay together because the notches were possibly too wide. If I were to redo this assignment, I would take into account how the pieces would need to fit together tightly, and therefore make the notches slightly skinnier. Also, I would possibly make notches on both the horizontal and vertical slabs so that the pieces would fit together like a puzzle.
